Frequently Asked Questions

AFTER CARE

TATTOOS

How long should I keep the bandage on my new tattoo?

Your tattoo artist will usually advise you to keep the initial bandage on for about 2-4 hours after getting inked. This helps protect the tattoo from bacteria and contaminants. Once you remove the bandage, it's time to start the aftercare routine.

What's the best way to clean my new tattoo?

Gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your clean hands and avoid using rough towels or washcloths. Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel.

Should I apply an ointment to my tattoo?

Yes, but use a thin layer. Opt for a tattoo-specific ointment or a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturizer. Apply it a few times a day to keep the tattoo moisturized but not overly greasy.

Is it normal for my tattoo to peel and scab?

Yes, your tattoo will go through various stages of healing, including peeling and scabbing. However, do not pick or scratch the scabs, as this could result in color loss or scarring.

Can I swim or take hot baths with a new tattoo?

It's best to avoid submerging your new tattoo in water for at least 2-3 weeks. Prolonged exposure to water, especially in pools, hot tubs, or natural bodies of water, can disrupt the healing process.

When can I expose my tattoo to sunlight?

You should keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight and tanning beds until it's fully healed. Once healed, always apply a high SPF sunscreen to protect your tattoo from fading.

How long does the complete healing process take?

Generally, it takes about 2-4 weeks for the surface of the tattoo to heal. However, the deeper layers can take several months to fully heal and settle.

What should I do if my tattoo becomes red, swollen, or shows signs of infection?

If you notice any signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, pus, or increased pain, consult a medical professional immediately.

Can I use any products on my healing tattoo?

Stick to gentle, non-scented products specifically designed for tattoos. Avoid products with harsh chemicals, fragrances, or alcohol.

Are there any clothing considerations during the healing process?

Loose-fitting, breathable clothing is recommended to prevent irritation. Avoid tight fabrics that might rub against your tattoo.
